Weight loss / gain
Your dog’s weight is changing too fast. What to do?
Small weight changes are normal, especially when they are planned.
But if your dog is:
- gaining weight too quickly,
- or losing weight too quickly,
it may mean the diet or activity level is not quite right.
A change of about 0.5–2% of current body weight per week is usually considered safe.
If weight changes faster than that, it is worth paying attention.
Why a dog gains weight too quicklyUsually there are more calories than needed
Rapid weight gain usually means calorie intake is higher than the dog actually needs.
Why that is undesirable:
- extra weight increases stress on joints,
- endurance may decrease,
- the risk of obesity rises,
- gain may come mainly from fat, not muscle.
It is especially important to control the rate of gain for:
- large-breed puppies,
- dogs with joint problems,
- dogs after spay/neuter,
- and dogs recovering from underweight or illness.
What to do when weight gain is too fastTreats, activity, and app settings
Check treats and snacks
Even small treats can greatly increase total daily calories.
Especially calorie-dense:
- cheese,
- fatty treats,
- chew snacks,
- pastes and oils.
Sometimes the issue is not the main diet but snacks.
Review activity level
Perhaps:
- the dog moves less than it seems,
- walks are calmer than you think,
- activity at home has decreased.
In that case you can:
- increase activity a little,
- or adjust activity level in the app so calorie recommendations become more accurate.
Make sure settings are correct
For example:
- age,
- spay/neuter status,
- current weight.
After spaying or neutering, many dogs need fewer calories, so the old diet may be too rich.
Why a dog loses weight too quicklyRapid weight loss is also undesirable
Losing weight too fast is also undesirable.
Why that is harmful:
- the body may lose muscle as well as fat,
- the dog may lack energy,
- the risk of weakness and GI problems increases,
- the diet may be too restricted,
- it can be a sign of illness
Be especially careful with weight loss for:
- senior dogs,
- very active dogs,
- animals after illness.
What to do when weight loss is too fastCalories, activity, weighing, and your vet
Check whether calories are enough
Perhaps:
- the diet was cut too much,
- energy needs are underestimated,
- the dog has become more active.
Sometimes a very small increase in calories is enough.
Assess real activity
If your dog:
- runs more,
- has started training,
- is more active on walks,
energy expenditure may be higher than before.
Check weighing accuracy
Weight can change temporarily because of:
- water,
- meal timing,
- gut fullness.
Weigh your dog regularly at the same time and look at the trend over several weeks.
When to see your veterinarian
If any of the following apply:
- weight changes very sharply,
- the dog loses appetite,
- lethargy appears,
- stool problems,
- vomiting,
- other unusual symptoms,
discuss it with your veterinarian. Sometimes the cause of weight change is not only diet but also health.
